Study break!

SAT

Sorry, it is Monday, and time to get serious . Some of you are registered for the SATon March 23rd. And if you are taking it , you’d like to do well. Maybe you are taking a class, or using a book to  study.

May I remind you of one other option? Learning Express Library , the first link on this page. Lots of practice tests and study guides — and a math course to brush up those skills. (  You’ll need  your  library  card )

So  study and make  yourself,  and mom  and dad,  happy.

Websites: Make Magazine & Craft Magazine

I love these magazines – Make and Craft . They are all about shapeing and changing your world . Some times in a small way, some times in a  big way.

Here is a simple sewing project that I think I could do :

Or how about building a sidecar for your bicycle.

Explore and find things to do – Learning to do things gives you one more way to shape your world.

Beastly – movie trailer

I loved  this  book, and  the  trailer  looks  like  they  might have done  justice  to it.

Fremont Teen on Jeopardy

Do you watch Jeopardy? Did you watch Monday night?

Did you know that Nikhil Desai , who was a contestant on Monday night, is a teenager from Fremont?

This is an article about him.

Desai said the contestants, several of whom he had met before at national trivia competitions, hung out in the hotel lobby and talked about school.

“That was our one thing in common,” he said. “We’re nerds.”

The contestants mostly knew all the answers, Desai said.

“Every question became some sort of buzzer race. Everyone was trying to perfect his buzzer style.”

Here are the contestant videos - Nikhil is on the second page.

If you look at the match up page – it looks like we get to cheer for Nikhil on February 28th (next Monday )

GO NIKHIL!

Happy Birth Anniversary, Wilhelm Carl Grimm

According  to Chase’s Calendar of Events, today is the Birth anniversary of Wilhelm Carl Grimm. He is one of writers of the Grimm’s Fairy Tales. I admit that I have never outgrown fairy tales, but I love the longer – and dare I say it – grimmer versions that are often found in the teen section of the library.

Beastly by Alex finn is a great retelling of beauty and the beast from the beast’s point of view and the movie will be coming out in March.

Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister by Gregory Maguire, is an excellent retelling of Cinderella. He is also the author of Wicked.

Zel by Donna Jo Napoli is a retelling of Rapunzel.

The Witch’s Boy by Michael Gruber is an original tale about a witch that raises an orphan.

There are many more. Do you have a favorite fairy tale retelling or fairy tale author that I have missed?

Who are these people?

Since this is the teen blog, you’d be right in guessing that this is the teen staff at Alameda County. We are missing a few , but do you know who works in your library?

Website: Gothic Charm School

Confession  time:   Jillian  Venters  ,  the  Lady  of  Manners, is  a friend  of  mine.  She  is  also very  charming  and  runs  the website : Gothic Charm School.  How can resist some one who “spends a not-inconsiderable amount of time trying to gently persuade others in her chosen subculture that being a Goth and being polite is much, much more subversive than just wearing black t-shirts with ‘”edgy” sayings on them.”

You can watch her here and then check out her website:
